Breast augmentation surgery is performed on many women throughout the world and causes very few problems for those who undergo these surgical procedures. There have been a number of cases of silicone implant rupture and gel leakage, however, as is explained in this article.

The use of PIP silicone breast implants was suspended in March 2010 by the French Medical Device Regulatory Authority (AFSSAPS) who informed regulatory bodies in other countries, advising them to suspend the marketing of PIP implants too.

The PIP implants sold in the UK were the subject of a product recall by Cloverleaf, the distributor, who also withdrew these devices from the market. This meant that these implants could no longer be used by consultant breast surgeons for a boob job, however it is causing issues for some women who had them implanted.

It appears that the French manufacturer of the implants had been using a different form of gel than the one previously approved by the licencing authorities, increasing the chances that they may leak at some point in the future.

The gel used in the implant appears to be reacting with the silicone shell causing it to break as time passes, thereby causing the gel to slowly leak into the nearby tissues. This can result in the gel spreading around the body with undesirable consequences.

Although a number of breast centres in the UK did use PIP implants, many used products from other manufacturers such as Allergan and Mentor. Patients with these devices have not experienced the same problems associated with the PIP implants.

Unfortunately some of those patients with the French implants have experienced gel leakages and have been referred to cosmetic or breast surgeons to have them removed. Mostly these patients request that replacement devices are implanted at the same time so that their figure doesn't revert back to their pre augmentation shape.

Luckily not all those who have received the PIP implants have suffered from them leaking so as long as the patient checks her breasts regularly for signs of leakages, there should be no need for replacement devices. Only those who have experienced gel leakages need have their implants removed and possibly replaced with new devices, should they wish to retain their enhanced figures.
